The Maine Learning Technolgy Initative began in 2000 as a conversation between former Governor Angus King, educators, and business leaders. Knowing we were educating children for a future we could not predict this group of indiviudual saw the chance to impact learning for students in Maine in ways never done before. With this initiative our students could be prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
By the Fall of 2002 every 7th and 8th grade teacher and 7th grader in a public school in the state of Maine had a laptop. In the fall of 2003 every 8th grader in a public school in the state of Maine had a laptop. 2007 found the program expanded to include all high school teachers in public schools in the state of Maine. To date 37,000 laptops are deployed in the state of Maine making this the largest one to one deployment in the world.
Through research we are beginning to see the impact this tool is having on student acheivment. Research about student acheivement in writing released last year showed those students who used their laptops for all parts of their writing from brainstorming, drafting revising, editing and publishing showed greater gains than those student who did not.
As the project continues more research and professional development will only enhance teacher's abilities to engage students to reach their academic goal.
